Bee Bee Tree and Moringa Tree

Reciprocity is not a transaction — it's a cycle. At Forest of Stars, a season of pruning Moringa becomes a lesson in returning care to the earth, and to a neighbouring tree in need.

“The soil is regressing” I thought as I saw Bee Bee Tree’s root network exposed above the soil level. I felt worried but I wasn’t sure what to do. (end April 2026)

A while later, we began pruning the Moringa trees. A season of giving by Moringa and receiving by us had come to an end…. We had enjoyed the sweet leaves and seed pods in our soup and omelettes, and we had learned about the medicinal properties of dried Moringa seeds, providing even as they began to dry out.

As I dug a hole to compost the branches and leaves, I remembered the Bee Bee Tree’s regressed soil and invited the children to help. Our task: to transport soil from the compost hole to make a blanket for Bee Bee Tree’s roots, and to create a space in the earth to return the Moringa branches for their next journey.

The children worked hard and had fun! They carefully covered the roots (video)

Two trees, a distance apart, connected by our ongoing learning about gratitude and reciprocity from our more-than-human teachers.

Worth sharing?

Auntie Zhen is a mother of two grown-up daughters. She has been working with children for more than 5 years — both in Singapore and here at Forest of Stars.

Auntie Zhen’s work with children brings her joy. Whenever they smile, she feels so happy. When they share their stories with her, she feels like she is young again.

She enjoys working with the team at Forest of Stars as she feels that they work well together and are always learning alongside one another. Auntie Zhen enjoys singing and dancing with the children, and has recently begun looking after the plants in school and in the garden — watching them grow brings her a sense of fulfilment.

Jou Goh

Primary Class Lead Teacher

M.A. (ECE), University of Denver · B.A. (ECE), University of Melbourne · Forest School Practitioner Leader Apprenticeship (Forest School Singapore) · Teaching Certificate in Speech Development and Creative Drama

Jou holds a Bachelor’s degree in English (TESOL) and previously worked as an English editor in an educational publishing company. Before becoming a parent, she gained several years of experience teaching English tuition.

Over time, she came to realise that a certificate alone doesn’t define a person. This led her to find out what truly matters — the essential qualities of a person.

She believes that children’s curiosity grows best under open skies, and that when their feelings are nourished and their connection with the world is strong enough, they find the inner will to start on a self-directed learning journey.
