A Story About a Beehive

Sometimes the right response is to do nothing at all. At Forest of Stars, a beehive discovered in the garden becomes a quiet lesson in coexistence, patience, and trust.

One morning, we noticed a large Cempedak growing on a young Cempedak tree. It was the first fruit the tree had produced, but upon further observation, we realised it was not a fruit at all, it was a BEEHIVE!

Our alarms began to go off and we discussed what to do. What if the children shook the tree? What if they banged into it? What if the beehive fell and all the bees  swarmed the children? Upon asking for advice from our neighbour, he said he would exterminate it. We felt uncomfortable and tried to think of ways we could move the hive without hurting the bees?

Kakak Noor, one of our garden assistants said,

"Just leave it be"

These words sat in our hearts peacefully.

So we did. We put a cone at the tree to remind the children not to disturb the beehive.

The children would observe the beehive from below, noticing the colour change from grey to golden, hypothesising that the golden colour was the honey. We marvelled at how the beehive never fell down even in huge storms. We said good morning to the bees and sang songs and told stories about the beehive.

Then one morning, we saw the beehive on the ground. The bees were gone, it was empty.

They came peacefully, they stayed peacefully, they leave peacefully….
